Airway Heights, WA

Stump grinding and yard cleanup in Airway Heights.

We grind the stump below grade. If you want the lawn repaired where the tree was, we haul the chips and backfill the hole. Scope and price go in writing before anything is scheduled, or you can book a free on-site consultation (OSC).

The neighborhood

Saturday already has a plan

The houses are north of Highway 2. So is Sunset Elementary, and so is the park beside it. A stump in one of those yards does not have to cost you the Saturday.

  • Cool off at the Sunset Park splash pad
  • Skate next to the elementary school
  • Play ball on Martella Field
  • Grab a volleyball court or a basketball hoop
  • Book a shelter and stay all afternoon
  • Turn the kids loose on the playgrounds
  • Swim the lap pool or the rec pool
  • Play soccer, flag football, or baseball
  • Walk the loop at Landreth
  • Bike Hayford toward Northern Quest
  • Run the dirt at the off-road park
  • Watch a race at the raceway

The gate is the whole job

  • Fences in Sunset Crossing and Traditions
  • Fresh concrete on the newer lots off Craig
  • A tracked rental is about 35 inches wide
  • A 36-inch gate is the whole plan
  • Tighter than that, it stays in the driveway
  • Tracks print a new lawn on the way in
  • Tell us about the gate
  • If a rental can make it, we'll say so

The tow eats the day

  • The grinders we found are in Spokane, Hayden, or Coeur d'Alene
  • Pick it up
  • Tow it home
  • Walk it to the stump
  • Grind
  • Hose it off
  • Beat the lock on the gate
  • A tooth rounded to about 1/16 inch just polishes the wood
  • The yards' rates are on the rent-or-hire guide

The trailer leaves, the chips stay

  • The pile is bigger than the stump
  • The rental yard does not haul it
  • Chips left in the hole sink later
  • Want grass there? Haul the chips and backfill
  • We don't sell the seed
  • We don't lay the sod
  • A stump in the Highway 2 strip needs a permit
  • The rental counter does not file it

Local rules

What Airway Heights actually requires

These are the city's written rules, not our house policy. A backyard stump and a street tree are different jobs.

Street and park stumps have to go below the surface

Airway Heights Municipal Code 12.34.120 says stumps of street and park trees shall be removed below the surface so the top does not project above the ground. The city also keeps the right to plant, prune, and remove trees in streets and public grounds, and to decide which trees belong in the right-of-way (12.34.080 and 12.34.110).

Limbs over a street need eight feet of clearance

Section 12.34.100 says the owner of a tree hanging over a street or sidewalk has to prune it so it doesn't block a streetlight or an intersection, with at least eight feet of clear space. The city gives two weeks' written notice before it comes onto private property for a dead or dangerous tree.

Right-of-way work needs a permit first

The public works department requires a permit before anyone grades, excavates, or otherwise disturbs a public right-of-way or easement. That is the planting strip and the highway frontage. It is not the middle of a fenced backyard.

A private-yard grind is usually not that permit

The city says landscaping, and tree or vegetation removal, needs a permit only if the excavation or fill passes the city's thresholds, or if the lot has a critical area such as a steep slope, wetland, or stream. The city page does not publish that threshold as a single number, so we don't invent one. If a stump looks like it sits in the right-of-way, we'll say so before we schedule. Questions on the threshold go to the city's planning department. Their page is here.

We file the 811 locate

Utilities get marked before the wheel turns. Spokane Stump Grinder submits the 811 request as part of scheduling. 811 does not mark private lines such as sprinklers. When those are in the way, we flag it. Read the 811 post and the private-locate post.

The work

Grind it, or grind it and leave the lawn ready

Airway Heights is on the same list as the rest of the Spokane and Coeur d'Alene region. Two services. No flat rate posted, because a stump against a new fence is not the same job as one in an open yard.

Stump grinding

The stump and the surface roots come down below grade. Chips go back in the hole and get tamped level. You can mow it. Most single stumps are a same-visit job. What's included.

Removal and cleanup

Everything in grinding, plus we haul the chips off and backfill with clean topsoil so the spot is finished level with the yard. This is the one to pick when something is going back in that spot.

Lawn repair after the tree

Renovating the lawn starts with the hole, not the seed. Chips left in the ground settle and sink. Cleanup hauls that wood out and leaves soil you can seed or sod over. We don't sell a separate lawn-renovation package, and we don't quote the grass.

What moves the number is on the services page: diameter at grade, root flare, depth, access, obstacles, what's in the wood, how many stumps, and whether the chips stay. Send a photo with the service request if you can.

From here

We know which side of the highway you're on

Born and raised in Spokane, Jeff brings more than 14 years of hands-on and management experience in home services, including four years as a business owner. Airway Heights sits just west on Highway 2, Fairchild off to the southwest and Spokane right behind you—a familiar part of the region he calls home.

There's no downtown to meet at. The highway is the main street, and people already sort themselves by which side of it they live on. North is the houses: the older streets between Russell, Craig, and 1st, Sunset Elementary and the park in the middle of that, then the newer subdivisions. Sunset Elementary is Cheney schools. South is tighter, under the base, with Shorty Combs as the park on that side.

Tell us the side and what's in the way. A gate in Traditions and a stump in the strip along the highway are not the same day, and you shouldn't have to explain the town to get a straight answer.

North of U.S. 2

This is the side with the lawns. Sunset Crossing and Traditions sit north of 6th. Hunters Crossing is the newer one off Craig. A gate or a new fence is usually the first thing we ask about.

The highway

The shops sit on Highway 2. A stump between the sidewalk and the curb is the city's, even when you mow it. We'll say so before anybody digs.

South of U.S. 2

Closer to Fairchild, and fewer new houses. If it's a commercial lot or the frontage, say so. Traffic and how we get in are what change the day.

Questions

Airway Heights stump questions

Do you take stump jobs in Airway Heights?

Yes. Airway Heights is on the service-area list with the rest of the West Plains towns we cover. Call or text 509-434-9554, or send the details through the request form.

Does my backyard stump need a city permit?

Usually the permit question is about the right-of-way, not the middle of a yard. Street and park stumps have to be taken below the surface, and disturbing the public right-of-way needs a public-works permit. On a private lot, the city requires a permit for tree removal when excavation passes its thresholds or the lot has a critical area. We will tell you if the stump looks like it sits in the strip along the street or the highway.

Can you leave the spot ready to seed or sod?

Yes, if you choose removal and cleanup. Grinding leaves the chips in the hole, raked and tamped. Cleanup hauls the chips and backfills with topsoil, finished level with the surrounding yard. That is the setup for repairing the lawn. We don't install the seed or the sod.

Who calls 811?

We do. The locate request is part of scheduling. You don't have to file it yourself. Private lines, including irrigation, are not part of an 811 locate.

Why won't you list a price for an Airway Heights stump?

Two stumps the same width can be an hour apart once you add the roots, the fence, the depth, and whether the machine can reach the backyard. You get a written estimate for your stump before we schedule. Nothing on this page is a rate.
